These findings are based on Roy Morgan Research Single Source – a New Zealand-wide survey of approximately 11,500 New Zealanders annually.
Pip Elliott, Head of Roy Morgan New Zealand, Roy Morgan Research says:
“New Zealanders have become more open minded in their attitudes to some key moral and social issues. As shown above, there has been increased support for rights of homosexual couples to be allowed to adopt children and a decrease in the view that homosexuality is immoral.
“New Zealanders are now more accepting of homosexuals than ever before. The age group driving this trend are those under the age of 50. In fact, only 41% of New Zealanders aged 50+ support homosexual couples adopting children (compared to the national average of 56%) and 32% believe homosexuality is immoral (compared to the national average of 26%).
“This more progressive attitude towards homosexuality is consistent with a decrease over this period in the belief that ‘the fundamental values of our society are under serious threat,’ which has declined from 66% ten years ago down to 59% currently.”
