In the September 2009 quarter 8.4% of Australians intend to go overseas on their next holiday in the next 12 months. This is up from 7.9% a year ago in the September 2008 quarter. By contrast, intention to stay in Australia on the next holiday is relatively stable (56.9% in September 2009 quarter vs. 56.7% in September 2008 quarter). The number of people intending to holiday in the next 12 months but unsure whether it will be in Australia or overseas has increased from 4.3% to 5.6%.

Some holiday intenders cannot nominate where they will be going on their next holiday and some nominate both domestic and overseas destinations. As result the percentages shown as intending to go overseas or domestic on their next holiday do not add to the total intenders.
Jane Ianniello, International Director Tourism, Travel & Leisure, Roy Morgan Research, says:
"Australians have been holidaying overseas in increasing numbers since 2003. This trend has remained unaffected by the Global Financial Crisis and from our most recent Tourism Leading Indicator Report it looks set to continue into the future.
“Discount airfares and access to new overseas destinations means that Australians have more choices than ever before in terms of an affordable holiday. Short-haul destinations such as Asia and New Zealand have particularly increased in popularity.
“The complete Tourism Leading Indicators Report delivers detailed information about the holiday intentions of Australians.”
