People living in country South Australia (11.2%) had the highest incidence of diabetes, at almost twice the national average, followed by country WA (7.7%) and country NSW (7.5%). People living in each of the capital cities, except for Adelaide and Darwin/Alice Springs, had an incidence below the national average.
An analysis of the demographic profile of those suffering with diabetes, compared to the Australian population average, shows that diabetes sufferers are generally older (almost twice as likely to be 50+ years old).
Lower income and education within this group means diabetes sufferers are 76% more likely to fall into the FG quintile, the lowest socio-economic group in the community. They are also 46% more likely to be overweight or obese than the average Australian 14+ years old. Conversely, the AB quintile is 44% less likely to suffer from diabetes and people with an acceptable weight are 55% less likely to suffer from diabetes.
