Mobile Phones Overtake Fixed Lines

20/11/2009
In the six months to September 2009, 85.2% of the Australian population (15.13 million) own or use a mobile phone, which has overtaken the proportion of the Australian population who live in a household with a fixed line connection (84.9%, 15.08 million).

The percentage of people with a fixed line connection has been on the decrease over the last 10 years and has finally been surpassed by people with a mobile phone, which has increased rapidly over this same time period.  In particular there has been a significant decrease in the last 6 months in the proportion of the Australian population who have a fixed line connection at home (from 88.0% to 84.9%).

Norman Morris, Industry Communications Director, Roy Morgan Research, says:

“It was only a matter of time before mobile phones became more popular than the traditional method of fixed line. The Australian population have adopted mobile phones at a steady rate which still has some room to grow, though it will be interesting to see whether the number of Australians with a fixed line at home will continue to decline or plateau.”
