2Long Term Average = Four year new car buying intention, February 2001 – January 2011.

Norman Morris, Industry Communications Director, Roy Morgan Research, says:

“This strong January result bodes extremely well for the Automotive Industry with private buyers clearly still in the market to purchase new cars. The highest result for long-term Intentions was recorded in July 2008, when 2,330,000 indicated they were on the market to purchase a new car in the next 4 years.

“At a segment level, the SUV segment fared best with almost 25% of long-term intenders opting for an SUV as their preferred body style. When looking at the individual SUV segments, the highly competitive Compact SUV segments performed the best, with greatest model gains experience by the Hyundai ix35 and Honda CR-V.

“Short term new car buying intentions – those intending to purchase a new vehicle within the next 12 months - also improved from 636,000 in December to 681,000 in January. When looking at the major brands, Mitsubishi made the strongest gains in short-term Intentions, with only Toyota and Holden bettering their monthly result.
