Of country Australians 9% (approximately 615,000) report Cholesterol problems, compared to 7.6% of city dwellers. Cardiovascular disease is also reported more commonly by people living in country areas, contributing to a higher reported incidence of Angina, Heart Attack and Stroke.
Nick Williams, Healthcare Consumer Consultant, Roy Morgan Research, says:
“The higher self reported rates of diabetes and morbidity associated with cardiovascular disease, reflect the increased incidence of risk factors amongst rural and regional Australians, including obesity and smoking.
“Insights into respondents with chronic illnesses, derived from the Roy Morgan Single Source database, include purchase frequency for prescribed and over the counter medicines. Discussion between patients and their doctors about their illness, perceptions of their illness and concerns about treatment are critical. Agreement on improved adherence to prescribed medicines will contribute to improved treatment outcomes for patients with chronic illnesses.”
