Long Term New Car Buying Intention continues to climb; mid-volume importers leading the way

27/07/2010
According to the Roy Morgan Automotive Leading Indicators for June 2010, the number of Australians intending to buy a new car in the next four years is 2,190,000. This is up on the May 2010 figure of 2,073,000 and well above the long term average of 2,052,000*.

In the shorter term, that is within the next 12 months, 600,000 Australians intend to buy a new car which is a return to the long term average volume.

Norman Morris, Industry Communications Director, Roy Morgan Research, says:

“Long term new car buying intentions are up in June 2010, coinciding with record June car sales. These gains also correspond with an increase in consumer confidence, potentially influenced by the RBA’s June 1 decision to leave the cash rate unchanged.

“The strongest long term intention gains are being experienced by the mid-volume importers, with Mazda, Honda and Volkswagen leading the way. This is a particularly good result for Mazda, posting their highest monthly intention result since mid 2009 – with approximately 50% of people wanting a new Mazda opting for the popular Mazda3.

“Of note though, the number of people intending a luxury vehicle has declined, with only BMW returning positive June gains in both long and short term intention.
