Small but growing percentage of Australians betting online

18/07/2010
Internet betting is becoming more popular according to the latest Roy Morgan Research Single Source data.  For the twelve months to March 2010, 1.5% of Australians 18+ (an estimated 250,000) say they usually bet via the Internet, up from 0.5% in the twelve months to December 2002.

TAB agencies or outlets are still the most popular method of betting at March 2010, with 11.4% of Australians stating that they usually bet at a TAB agency or outlet, down from 13.6% at December 2002.  A small and declining percentage usually place a bet using an on-course tote or bookmaker – only 1.9% in the twelve months to March 2010, down from 2.6% in December 2002.

Where usually place bets

Please note that these percentages are based on where usually place bet in last three months.

Jane Ianniello, Roy Morgan Research International Director of Tourism, Travel & Leisure, says:

“A small but increasing percentage of Australians are betting via the internet. By contrast TAB agencies/outlets and on-course tote or bookmakers are becoming less popular.

“Online bettors are more likely than the average bettor to be male.  They tend to gamble more often and spend more than other bettors.”
