Norman Morris, Industry Communication Director, Roy Morgan Research, says:
“IGA is set to gain 418,000 new customers with the recently announced takeover of Franklins stores.
“The number of people who shop at both IGA and at Franklins is relatively small compared with the very large cross shopping that occurs between most supermarkets – 73% of Coles shoppers also shop at Woolworths and 64% of Woolworths shoppers also shop at Coles. Even Aldi has 80% of its customers also shopping at Woolworth in an average 4 week period. The low number of Franklins customers also shopping at IGA is partly driven by Franklins strength in New South Wales and IGA’s relative weakness there, so the additional customers IGA will gain is substantial.”
