Short and Long Term New Car Buying Intention up; Hyundai and Toyota driving growth

18/06/2010
According to the Roy Morgan Automotive Leading Indicators for May 2010, an estimated 658,000 Australians intend to buy a new car in the next 12 months (excluding Fleet, Government and Rental Buyers). This is up on the April 2010 figure of 598,000, and back above the long term average of (608,000*).

The same period also saw long term new car buying intention rise, with 2,073,000 Australians intending to buy in the next four years; up from 2,049,000 in April 2010.

Norman Morris, Industry Communications Director, Roy Morgan Research, says:

“After a recent decline in short and long term new car buying intention, both measures returned positive results in May.

“Mitsubishi and Toyota both recovered from below average results in April, with Mitsubishi posting the strongest percentage gain and Toyota the strongest volume increase in long term new car buying intention amongst the top 10 brands.

“Of particular note, for the first time Hyundai surpassed 100,000 people intending to buy, of those more than 60% intend to purchase in the next 12 months. These figures coincide with a number of new model launches for Hyundai, including the ix35, i45 and i20 later this year, building on the brand’s increasingly popular portfolio of models including the well regarded Getz and i30.
